    DIGITAL PRESERVATION

    Lauren Sorensen,

    Stanford University Libraries

    Presentation Title:

Digital Preservation for audiovisual materials: where to start, what is the approach?

    Abstract:

Digital preservation is a process, and unlike paper or film, digitized analog audiovisual media, and born-digital files cannot sit “on the shelf” for years and be considered preserved. Instead, this type of material must be paid attention to, and creative or community-oriented approaches are often useful, if not critical to this work. This presentation will review select approaches to digital preservation for moving images and sound material in a cultural heritage setting, with an emphasis on smaller or less-resourced organizations. The talk will also cover digital preservation common practices, discuss a selection of tools, and how developing a community of practice can support your efforts.

    Speaker:

Lauren Sorensen (she/her) works as Digital Projects & Data Manager at Stanford University Libraries’ Digital Library Systems and Services unit. She has previously held positions with organizations such as Bay Area Video Coalition, Library of Congress, Digital Preservation Outreach & Education Network, and has worked as a consultant with the City of Los Angeles, Glenstone Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. She has previously served on the Association of Moving Image Archivists’ Board of Directors and is a contributing author to Archival Accessioning (2021, Society of American Archivists). She holds degrees from New York University in Moving Image Archiving & Preservation (2007), and the University of California, Santa Cruz.

    DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT

    Jamie Lean,

    New Zealand Micrographics

    Presentation Title:

    Archival Resilience – Hidden Dangers

    Abstract:

We think we know what we’re talking about when we see the terms Disaster and Risk Management. We are thinking fire, flood, earthquake, and we can also recognise other risks and threats to our archival collections – a lack of resources such as money, staff, and training. These are worthy of discussion but there are other threats to our archives that are not as obvious but maybe even more damaging. The weight of bureaucracy, workarounds that become embedded practice, and the degradation of archival ethos and practice. These and other issues can get lost in the day-to-day struggle to preserve a nation’s heritage but will have a devastating effect on the use of our archive’s decades in the future. I will highlight some of these issues using examples from my own experience and offer some ideas about avoiding these pitfalls.

    Speaker:

After studying architecture and running a photography business, Jamie Lean joined the New Zealand Film Archive in 1995 working on videotape and film and organising the deposit of collections to the archive. As the archival operations manager for 15 years, he managed the transition to digital workflows and creating new archival storage – physical as well as digital. He has also served on the Executive Council of SEAPAVAA as Secretary-General and helped to set up the New Zealand branch of UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme. Jamie has a Master of Information Management from Victoria University, and this focused on issues around the IT/Archival interface. He is currently the Operations Manager for NZ Micrographics, digitising heritage papers, photographs, and audio-visual material for a wide range of institutions and individuals.

    OUTREACH AND EDUCATION

    Chalida Uabumrungjit,

    Film Archive (Public Organization)

    Presentation Title:

    Meet New Audiences

    Abstract:

Since 2020, when the film archive had to close for a period of time due to the pandemic, the staff decided to upload our archive collection for the people who had to stay home. Suddenly, we found new audiences who never knew about the film archive and we found a way to communicate with them. Creating these new online programmes has activated the archive in multiple ways, enabling us to move forward while transitioning to new norms.

    Speaker:

Chalida Uabumrungjit serves as the Director of the Film Archive, Thailand since 2018. She graduated in film from Thammasat University and film archiving from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. Since 2013, she is one of the Executive Committee of FIAF.

    ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN

    Sopheap Chea,

    Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center

    Presentation Title:

Archiving and Accessing the Khmer Rouge Survivors’ Memory through Inter-Generational Dialogue and Multimedia Application

    Abstract:

Bophana Center initially implemented an online exhibition on the intergenerational dialogue between the Khmer Rouge survivors and youth through documenting and sharing survivors’ personal stories in 2015 known as “Acts of Memory” that allow youth, especially high school and university students, to talk to their parents or grandparents regarding experiences during the Khmer Rouge. The project aims to keep survivors’ memory alive and to educate young people about the history of the Khmer Rouge by conducting and video-recording more than a hundred intergenerational dialogues between Khmer Rouge survivors and their children, and also providing public accessibility to documented memory through multimedia application knows Khmer Rouge History App.

    Speaker:

Born in 1984 in Cambodia, Sopheap Chea grew up with a family who experienced and went through a notorious regime of the Khmer Rouge ruling Cambodia between 1975 and 1979. He earned his Master of Arts in History at Khmerak University in 2012. Sopheap is a historian, who from a young age was curious about stories of life in Cambodia before he was born. That curiosity is what led him to Bophana Audiovisual Resource Centre, initially as an Audiovisual Archivist and today as Executive Director of the center where he directs many projects on the creation and dissemination of memory of Cambodia.
