    VIETNAM FILM INSTITUTE (VFI)

The Vietnam Film Institute (VFI) formally known as the Vietnam Documentary Film Institute, was established on the 22nd of September 1979 under the Decision 343/CP of Vietnam’s Government Council.  The VFI is an administrative institution under the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism and is responsible for the registration, archiving and preservation of film materials; cinema theory study, film archiving technologies; and disseminating film materials,  according to the Vietnamese Law.

The VFI has two branches located at Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam. With nearly 80,000 16mm and 35mm film reels and thousands of videotapes with 20,000 titles on local and international cinema, the VFI’s vault is one of the largest vaults in the Southeast Asian region in terms of the collection size.

The VFI is one of the founding members of the SouthEast Asia-Pacific Audio Visual Archive Association (SEAPAVAA) and has successfully hosted the association’s annual conferences in 1998 (3rd SEAPAVAA Conference), 2004 (8th SEAPAVAA Conference, jointly held with the International Federation of Film Archives) and 2012 (16th  SEAPAVAA Conference). The upcoming virtual 25th SEAPAVAA Conference in June 2021 will thus be the fourth time that the VFI is hosting the event.
